According to a certain red book, I was born during the Cusp of Exposure: "self-concealment is futile: the more [you] try to hide, the more the world seems to take notice of [you]." In fact, as I get older, I do grapple with my dueling natures of wanting to hide and wanting to be seen. I do enjoy being the center of attention, but I can also be painfully introverted.
In a certain sense, making artwork requires these opposing forces: work is made in solitude but then must be brought forward in front of an audience. |
And then, more generally, I am also always struck by people who are willing to post selfie after selfie on Facebook but then get furious when they perceive their privacy violated (which we all know is inevitable these days).
