Histology Series
2019
As humans, we all must confront the joys and challenges of inhabiting our own bodies. No matter by nature or by nurture--no matter what we look like on the outside, we are all composed of a beautifully complex system of cells on the inside. Sometimes the health of these cells becomes affected, and we need medical care to help restore and heal these cells. In addition to traditional medicine, art can aid us in our recovery.
In this series of artwork, approximate representations of cells under a microscope transform into symbolic images of hope and healing. Using the process I honed for my wine stain artwork, I replaced the red wine with hematoxylin, a histology stain that helps identify cellular anomalies when a tissue or biopsy sample is sent to a lab for diagnosis. These artworks were inspired by my own difficult health history and were created specifically to be displayed in the new Planned Parenthood building in Corning, NY. Through the painted gold embellishments, I want to help others feel uplifted and empowered in their own experiences of health and healing. |
This project was made possible by a grant from the Possibility Applied Fund. This fund was launched in 2016 by Rhonda Morton, founder of Savannah Consulting, a Certified B Corporation and Best For The World - Community 2019 Honoree. Special thanks goes to The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes for administering the grant.
