Sitting along in the VW, waiting for my sister to return from an errand at a friend's house, I started drawing the street sign just ahead of the car. By the end of the day, I finished the page with a small drawing of a ceramic goldfish which hung on my bedroom wall. Over the next few months, I took my sketchbook everywhere and found it particularly engaging when I was alone in restaurants and coffeeshops.

Gradually, the pages took on a life of their own. They reflected my thoughts and moods. They recorded random events. They incidentally became a collage of personal history and memory.

This is a compilation of my favorite pages. They span three years, two sketchbooks, one hundred and sixty pages, four living situations, two cars, three colleges, twenty-two states, seven hairstyles, countless pens, and a life-changing truth embodied in a skeleton key.
